Poultry farming is the process of raising chickens, turkey, fowl, ducks and other poultry birds for farming eggs or for the purpose of selling the meat. India is among the largest producers of eggs and meat in the world. Eggs and Broiler meat are the major products of poultry in India. It is based upon purpose, and the structure of the farm depends upon it.
There are farms where poultry is raised exclusively for eggs which are also known as layer farms. The breeding farms are the ones where poultry is raised for meat. In India especially, this farming is an important structure as being a developing country and many people living in poverty, eggs and chicken are cheaper sources of vitamins, minerals and protein. Also, chicken is something which is widely acceptable by everyone in India. Chicken being lean meat is also a favorable option over red meat regarding health reasons. Thus, the demand for such poultry is growing. Similarly, eggs are a rich source of protein, and it is nowadays almost considered as a vegetarian diet by many. Eggs are being widely consumed by Indian population even by those considered purely vegetarian. Eggs provide energy and protein.
There are main two structures of poultry farming- Autonomous farming and Commercial Farming. Autonomous poultry or farms have a relatively small structure, and the output is limited that is production is small. Commercial farms, on the other hand, are on a large scale and deliver a big output. Due to growing demands attempts are made to bring small scale industries under large scale industries. Earlier farms were more concentrated in rural areas but now they are spreading near the cities to meet growing tendencies and demands. Nowadays some poultry products are also being exported. Rise in exports are means gaining more foreign exchanges. Thus, poultry is contributing to economic development. It is one of the major economy trade and commerce industry.
